|
Sharks | San Jose is on the top of the league right now, no other team has scored more goals then the Sharks with 170 goals scored compared to Boston's 159 who is 2nd best. Captain Paul Kariya is leading the team and he's on fire. The top rookies are scoring goals and racking points. Torres, Spezza and Cheechoo are playing like veterans and it looks like everything is working perfectly for Darryl Sutter who sits 1st in the West.

Bruins | Boston have been consistent ever since the first day of this year, and have always been there or thereabouts at the top of the conference and with Brett Hull deemed not good enough to make the first line (Is that a big surprise?) Boston have got to be favourites for the Prince Of Wales trophy at the moment, and with the Rolston-Thornton-Guerin line putting up a combined 145 points.. who'd bet against them?
![]() |
Avalanche | The Avs are a power house, starting in nets moving up to defense then making its way up front. No one is playing individualy, its all about the team. Each player has they're role and they know it. They are playing Avalanche hockey and Patrick Roy has been amazing this year, Roy is on a mission... If you want to beat the Avs then start scoring on Saint-Patrick.

Flames | In Calgary every thing works in the way that Jamie Hunt wants it to. He has rebuild that team into a stanley cup contender and they are extremly dangerous. Martin Brodeur is on the top of his game and when a team has 6 players on the All-Star team, you know that something is right. This team might be one of the most finesse team's ever assembled. They rarly hit or take stupid penaltys. No team is better then Calgary on the Power Play. The Flames are simpley offensive and they have all the tools to play that way.

Rangers | The end of the year will tell whether or not the Rangers unofficial "youth-policy" can actually work at this level. Ted Nolan's young charges and the inspirational leadership of Brian Leetch have served the team well so far, But they've faltered recently which could be a direct effect of trading Eric Lindros. They're in good shape for the playoffs and whatever happens, it cant be as bad as last year.
![]() |
Canadiens | The Habs didnt have the best start by any means, but they're steadily clawing their way back and at the time of writing, they sit comfortably in second place in the East. Ziggy Palffy and Teemu Selanne cost more than $14 million combined and so far theyve combined for 69 points. Are they worth it? We'll see.
![]() |
Senators | Ottawa have added some grit to a team that didnt even know the meaning of the world hit, and have seen their fortunes take a turn after their addition of a checking line. Currently sitting 4th in the East, Captain Joe Sakic has 65 points from 41 games and Alex Mogilny posting a +27 rating. Add to those, the addition of Mats Sundin and Surely for Ottawa, The only way Is Up.
![]() |
Sabres | Buffalo have been a surprise team this year, Everybody knew they had the quality to make the playoffs, but not many expected them to do it. A Defensive core of Chris Chelios and Patrice Brisebois protecting the goal of Eddie 'The Eagle' Belfour better than anyone expected with a +21 and +17 ratings respectively. Not to discount Tony Amonte and the rest of the Buffalo offense who've played a huge part in firing Buffalo to 6th place in the Eastern Conference.
![]() |
Canucks | Vancouver, the Hottest team in the NAHL as we speak being 7-2 in their last ten. Since they completly changed their approach on the way they play they've been excellent and un-stoppable. The Nucks found the trouble makers in the locker room and addressed that problem by signing veteran role players, sending some in the stands and sending the goons down to the minors. Since then Naslund, Morrison, Sedin and Jovanovski have picked up their game. They finaly can play in the offensive zone instead of being on the PK or on the bench waiting for they're shift. It'll be interesting to see if the Canucks can play Finesse hockey till the end.

Flyers | Having been the saving grace for Philadelphia, Roman Cechmanek's numbers have truly dipped of late, and in turn so have Philadelphia's recent performances. Captain Jason Allison has led by example, earlier in the year he had a run of 16 goalscoring games. His 4 game winning goals also prove his worth to the Flyers. But this is'nt the Jason Allison show. Changes were a certainty, and in from Dallas came (amongst others) Zubov and Sydor. Maybe now they'll get a stay-at-home defenseman and stop the rot.
![]() |
Hurricanes | At time of writing, the Carolina Hurricanes sit 7th in the East, and they dont seem to be making too much of an improvement. This team so far this year is the definition of underachievers, A few trades have been made in recent weeks, however the effects have not yet begun to show and effectively, Carolina remain the same team. Offensively they cant really be faulted, But at the other end of the ice, they could use, not depth, but better players all around. The Goaltending situation is probably a weak point also.
![]() |
Ducks | In Anaheim, just like in Colorado there is no individual leading the team. Head Coach Michel Bergereon focuses on playing every player and to make them play as a team. It is working so far. They are in the middle of the West right now and they should stay there for the remaining of the season. The Ducks have 5 rookies over the 30 point mark along with Iginla and McDonald. Giguere has been playing normal and the Ducks weak on defense. If they hope a real run, they should fix that.
![]() |
Maple Leafs | Come The Leafs come the end of the Eastern teams playing .500 hockey. The Leafs are destined to be caught up in the scrap for the last couple of playoff spots in the conference. But lets face it, the Leafs have never been spectacular and they dont really have any bona fide superstars on their roster, the kind of players that would give a team a chance at winning the Stanley Cup especially with the recent departure of long-serving captain Mats Sundin. On a positive note, their goaltending situation is looking good for years to come with youthful Brian Boucher backing up experienced Sean Burke.
![]() |
Oilers | Once again the Oilers keep surprising us as they are still in the top 8. Rookies Gamache and Soin are still leading the Oilers in points. The mystery here is how can a team that lets so many goals against them still be able to compete? They are extremly awful on defense and they get deked too often. Praise the lord that Tommy Salo is in nets or else Edmonton would be lower in the standings. Salo hasn't posted great numbers but he is the main reason behind the Oilers success.
![]() |
Stars | Dallas has the worst defense in the league. They recently traded away Zubov and Sydor, thats more bad news! The Stars are the last team in the West below the .500 mark that are still in the top 8. GM Bradly has shaken the team this past weak trading Modano and other Stars. There isn't alot of good to say on the Stars as they are extremly poor on defense and it doesnt help having Irbe in nets. At this point the Dallas Stars are a question mark. The latest trades might wake the team up or make them crumble, Satan and Jokinen will prove them selves and the way they play will determine the Stars chances but so far things are good.
![]() |
Coyotes | Pheonix is simply a normal team searching for their indentity. They are in the middle in alot of area's. They are a force but they are not weak. They dont get scored on too often and they dont light the lamp too often either. Bob Francis has this team working as a whole. We cant say they have a finesse style but they dont hit alot like many of the Western Conference teams. Since trading away Sean Burke, the question is, will Jani Hurme keep them in the top 8?
![]() |
Thrashers | Underperforming "Stars" have dogged an Atlanta side, truly undermined by their $50 million payroll. Sergei Fedorov is a man that has been picked out as not pulling his weight, along with goaltender Patrick Lalime. The Thrashers do have a youthful core however, even without the long-gone Heatley and Kovalchuk. Andrew Brunette has been stand-out for the Thrashers this year so far, but he's the best of a bad bunch..
![]() |
Capitals | The Capitals have begun to move up through the gears after a horrible start left them bottom of the NAHL, after a quick stint in the basement, Slava Fetisov's troops rallied to lift the Caps up and firmly in the direction of the playoffs, Most thought Fetisov was doing a good job, but he was replaced very recently by Brian Sutter. This move may backfire for the Capitals, as the team is no better than its current position.
![]() |
Lightning | Next on Unsolved Mysteries : What the hell happened to Tampa Bay?! Currently 11th and in complete frefall, the statistic of ONE single solitary victory in the last 10 games. Nikolai Khabibulin has gone walkabout and on current form he wouldnt stop a beachball, nor could the offense put a M&M past a goaltender. Dark times in Sunny Florida, they have to bounce back quickly.
![]() |
Red Wings | Detroit have picked up their Wings as of late but they have to be more consistant starting with Lord Byron. They definatly have to score more goals. The Wings struggle in their defensive zone as most of the team is on the minus scale. One has to wonder when will Pronger start making a difference. Detroit's best player this year is, 3rd liner, Todd Marchant. The only guy on the team that is on the plus side. This is one major problem that Wings coaching staff have to address. But, We have to give Pat Burns the chance to prove him self behind the bench, so far so good, he's been doing the job but its still not enough.
![]() |
Wild | Minnesota is playing some strange hockey. They play tight tight defense wich is good but they dont have many chances to score, they are the weakest team in the league as for offense, the Wild barly shoot on net aswell. The worst player on the team is Joe Nieuwendyk. His -23 rating is completly awful. Jacques Lemaire has to do something, maybe he must stop playing the trap get the offense going. There are offensive players rotting in Minnesota. Is it the right mix of players and coaches?
![]() |
Penguins | As long as they have Mario, Pittsburgh will have a chance, But I think its time that number 66 moved on, for the good of the Penguins. It'd be best if they traded out him for youth and draft picks and started rebuilding the team. I see absolutely no other way to turn Pittsburgh into a winning force. They already have a few diamonds in the rough tattered around their roster, but to be able to do anything with them, they need like-minded players around them. The sooner the rebuilding starts, the quicker the the championships will come.
![]() |
Panthers | Florida have looked to make their team contenders straight away, which you would assume is the aim of most 'lesser' teams. But perhaps Florida have moved too quickly and they have a blend of experience and youth that so far has not been working. Maybe because theres no medium to the experience, the players are either young or old, not many of them are in their prime and its showing. The Panthers have improved, but theyre still not good enough.
![]() |
Blackhawks | With players of All-Star calibre, such as Eric Daze and Mark Recchi, backed up by Roman Turek, Chicago shouldnt be in the position they currently find themselves. Their team is nothing spectacular and they will struggle to make the playoffs, especially with Mikhail Yakubov facing a long injury layoff. Perhaps Chicago should rebuild their way out of obscurity near the bottom of the conference.
![]() |
Blues | An ageing defense of Phil Housley and Ken Daneyko are currently on a St Louis roster that has gems dotted all over it. With the recent addition of Eric Lindros, St Louis are looking for a turn in fortunes and Lindros has made that possible with 4 points in 5 games, but posting a -5 rating at the same time. Maybe St Louis needs to look around at their defense a little more. Maybe a proven scorer, much in the vein of Lindros, but one who isnt struggling for confidence to fire St Louis up the standings.
![]() |
Jackets | Not much was expected of Columbus this year, a team that's growing year by year, and it wont be this year either that that team becomes a challenger. They have a solid defensive core and their goaltending situation aint too shabby. However, Nikolai Zherdev is the closest thing they have to a 'sniper' and he has only just broken into the side. Zdeno Chara, Brad Stuart, Rostislav Klesla and Marc Denis are the backbone of this team, youth and skill, and learning all the time.
![]() |
Kings | After a less than succesful start to the year, LA have started to claw their way back under the inspirational Jeremy Roenick. Felix Potvin under performing between the pipes. Adam Deadmarsh and Erik Cole acting as linemates for Roenick cant be too much of a bad thing. Maybe its the coach, maybe its your mother.. Maybe its martians. But something is messing up LA right now..
![]() |
Islanders | Even bigger than the episode of Unsolved Mysteries : What Happened To Tampa? Is the second episode, New York Islanders - How? Okay so they dont have the best players, they arent gonna win the Stanley Cup, but theyre not the worst team. The run they have had in the last 30 or so games has been horrible, It comes to something when your top points scorer has a -20 rating. The Isles cant score, the Isles cant defend and the Isles are in deep trouble.
